Carnevale di Venezia is world famous. The wearing of masks was once common place among Venetians. Masks hide social identity, allowing people of differing social classes to mingle freely. This was quite useful as citizens of Venice could vote on public issues while wearing a mask, creating a form of secret ballot. The wearing of masks also caused trouble however, as people tended to be more liberal, doing things behind the cover of a mask, that they would not normally do in public. It was decreed that people could only wear masks during the period of the festival.
